Total Ankle Replacements

Total Ankle Replacements

Ankle arthritis can happen as a result of ankle instability, ankle fractures, or even ankle osteochondral defects. In the past, the treatment for ankle arthritis was limited to an ankle fusion. This is a surgical procedure where the leg bone (the tibia) and the talus, another one of the ankle, are brought together and made into one bone. This removes all motion from the ankle joint.

Duke Orthopaedics and the Foot and Ankle Team are pioneering a newer treatment method for patients with ankle arthritis: an ankle replacement. In this procedure, part of the tibia and talus is cut. In its place, a metal and plastic implant is placed. The total ankle replacement allows patients to maintain motion and mobility of the ankle. Dr. Selene Parekh at the North Carolina Orthopaedic Clinic is one of the leaders in this area. His care team will work with you to determine the best course of treatment for your ankle arthritis.
