What Is the Rotator Cuff?

The rotator cuff, which is composed of muscles and tendons, is located in your shoulder. It connects your humerus (upper arm bone) to your scapula (shoulder blade), essentially holding your arm inside your shoulder socket and helping you lift and rotate your arm. Many people develop rotator cuff tears gradually over time, due to natural age-related degeneration. However, you can also tear your rotator cuff suddenly by falling onto an outstretched arm or lifting a heavy object.

Symptoms of a Rotator Cuff Tear

A rotator cuff tear can cause considerable shoulder and arm pain, which may increase when you lift and lower your arm or when you’re lying on that side. Other symptoms include:

  • Weakness
  • Decreased range of motion
  • A crackling sensation (also known as “crepitus”)
  • A snapping sensation (if you tear your rotator cuff suddenly)

Treatment for a Rotator Cuff Tear

It’s important to promptly seek treatment if you suspect a rotator cuff tear, since ignoring the injury could lead to further damage over time. In many cases, we recommend that patients first attempt to treat rotator cuff tears using conservative treatments, which might include pain medication, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), corticosteroid injections, physical therapy, and periodic rest. In some instances, however, it may be necessary to surgically reattach the torn tendon. If that’s the case for you, you’ll be glad to know that our team has extensive experience performing rotator cuff repairs.
