Dr. Joe T. Minchew was born and raised in Savannah, Georgia. He received his undergraduate degree at University of Georgia graduating magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. He acquired his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Minchew continued his Orthopaedic Residency and fellowship in Disorders and Surgery of the Spine at the UCLA School of Medicine.
After his fellowship, Dr. Minchew joined the faculty of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he trained residents and medical students as well as seeing patients in a busy clinic setting. During his tenure at UNC, he was an award winning teacher and the Director of the Musculoskeletal Course, recognized as the outstanding basic science course in the second year of medical school. He conducted research into the basic science of disc degeneration and low back pain and was awarded a grant from the Orthopaedic Research and Educational Foundation to continue his work. He resigned in 2003 to start the North Carolina Orthopaedic Clinic with Duke University.
Dr. Minchew’s primary focus is diseases and disorders of the spine. He remains current with new technologies and techniques by attending annual conferences and hands-on laboratory clinics. He is past President of the North Carolina Spine Society and has been chosen to moderate and lecture sessions at prestigious meetings such as the North American Spine Society.
Dr. Minchew is married and his wife Jan is a Medical Technologist. He has two teenage daughters and lives in Chapel Hill. His care team medical assistant is Susan Furr, MA
