Dr. Andrew Schwartz is a fellowship-trained, board-certified orthopaedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee replacement and reconstruction. His practice includes nonsurgical and surgical care for osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis (and other auto-immune arthritis), and avascular necrosis. His comprehensive practice includes medications, injections, physical therapy protocols, and other interventions that aim to avoid surgery. He offers partial and total joint replacement, including cutting edge methods such as robotic and computer navigation, 3-dimensional anatomic modeling, anterior-based muscle sparing total hip arthroplasty, and rapid postoperative recovery protocols with an option for outpatient surgery. Dr. Schwartz also performs revision arthroplasty for failed joint replacements and specialized reconstructions for less common conditions. He works with each patient individually to identify their specific needs, goals, and expectations and collaborates to develop a long-term plan for personalized treatment, recovery, and monitoring. Returning patients to their physical independence is the single best part of his role.
Dr. Schwartz is from West Chester, Ohio and remains a lifelong Ohio sports fan, having played collegiate football in his native state. He received his medical degree with distinction in orthopaedic research from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honors society. He then completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, where he was granted the Thomas L. Bradbury Jr. award for excelling as a junior resident and the George Wright award for resident education. He then sought out a year of subspecialized training in hip and knee reconstruction here at Duke University. He was an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Iowa before returning to Duke and the North Carolina Orthopaedic Clinic. He remains an active researcher in efforts to further the field of adult reconstruction, authoring over 200 manuscripts, textbook chapters, and presentations. Dr. Schwartz is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS), serving on the digital health committee and as the director of AAHKS arthroplasty implant registry. He is also a reviewer for several top orthopaedic journals.
In his free time, Dr. Schwartz likes to cheer on Cincinnati sports teams, exercise, and spend time with his wife and two labrador retrievers. He looks forward to working with you to regain joy in your free time, as well.
